The streets of Basseterre were awash in red on Monday as thousands of workers and supporters of the St. Kitts Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) turned out to celebrate Labour Day.
Commemorated annually on the first Monday in May, the day is set aside to honour the contributions of the workforce and their role in nation building.
Marching ahead of the masses was the SKNLP’s political leader and prime minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Terrance Drew. He was joined by several of his colleagues including Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, the federation’s deputy prime minister.
“In less than two years, this Labour administration has delivered to you what the former administration could not deliver in seven years,” Prime Minister Drew told cheering supporters.
He also noted that his administration has created an environment in which businesses can thrive, which in turn assures jobs stability and improves the climate for job creation.
“This is the party for workers,” Drew declared. “This is the party for business owners. This Labour administration reduced taxes for businesses…so we care about businesses. We care about workers. We care about everybody here in St. Kitts and Nevis, and that is why we must be proud of your Labour administration [and] our track record that speaks for itself.”
Prime Minster Drew also outlined the many accomplishments of his administration since coming to office in 2022.
“None can do it like Labour! The highest minimum wage in the Caribbean delivered in less than two years. Pension for GAE workers (Government Auxiliary Employees) in less than two years. Gratuity payment for GAE workers in less than two years. Water in less than two years. Electricity in less than two years. A hospital [is to be started] in less than two years. This Labour administration is working tirelessly hard on your behalf,” said Dr. Drew.
Ahead of the Labour Day march, the SKNLP, in partnership with the St. Kitts and Nevis Trades and Labour Union, also staged the customary wreath laying ceremony in honour of the departed leaders and stalwarts of the 92-year-old political organisation.
