Minister with responsibility for Sport and Culture, Samal Duggins, has confirmed an agreement between St. Kitts and Nevis and the Sussex Cricket Club. The arrangement makes St. Kitts and Nevis an official premium partner to the club for the rest of 2024.
As part of the deal, local cricketers will be given the opportunity to compete against international players and be scouted by international teams. This will also create avenues for the Federation to bolster its position as a premier sport tourism destination.
Additionally, St. Kitts and Nevis will also host one of Sussex’s Metro Bank One Day fixtures in August.
In return, productions from the Federation will be displayed on two sponsor-branded pitch mats on the north and south of Sussex Cricket’s home ground on an LED banner on the scoreboard on big screen advertisements and an advertisement on Livestream.
Minister Duggins also pointed out the impact the agreement will have on St. Kitts and Nevis’ overall tourism product.
“This collaboration not only elevates our presence in the international sports arena, but also promotes cultural exchange and tourism between St. Kitts and Nevis and the UK. We are using this opportunity to display the essence of our beautiful islands and we look forward to showcasing our unique culture and hospitality to the cricket fans of Sussex,” the sport and culture minister said.
He also re-emphasised the ripple benefits for the country’s cricketing brand.
“By attracting cricket teams during their off-season, we aim to make St. Kitts and Nevis a go-to destination for pre-season training. Additionally, the expertise and resources from Sussex Cricket will bolster our local sports development programmes, enhancing our Sports Academy,” he added.
Pete Fitzboydon, CEO of Sussex Cricket, praised St. Kitts and Nevis’ ambition, noting its alignment with Sussex Cricket Club’s aspirations.
The club, which is the oldest professional sports club in the world, sees this partnership as a promising collaboration.
St. Kitts and Nevis is exploring various strategies to enhance its sport tourism credentials and this partnership serves as a pivotal step towards establishing the country as a prime destination for cricket and sports tourism.
