The St. Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee (SKNOC) has announced the selection of three athletes who will represent the Federation at the upcoming Paris Olympic Games, set to begin in just two weeks.
This selection marks a historic moment for St. Kitts and Nevis, as it includes the youngest ever athlete from the nation to compete in the Olympics and the first representative for Swimming.
Troy Nisbett, at just 15 years old, will compete in the 50m freestyle in the discipline of swimming. Despite his young age, Troy has already made a name for himself having competed in several regional and international competitions including the CARIFTA Aquatic Championships and the World Championships.
His selection for the Olympics not only makes him the youngest athlete from St. Kitts and Nevis to compete, but also the first swimmer to represent the twin islands at this prestigious event.
Zahria Allers- Liburd, a track athlete, will compete in the Women’s 100m. The reigning Women’s 100m champion for St. Kitts and Nevis, Zahria is currently attending the University of South Florida in the United States where she has been excelling on the track. Her participation in the Olympics is a testament to her hard work and dedication to the sport.
Naquille Harris will compete in the Men’s 100m. The reigning Men’s 100m national champion, Naquille also attends a university in the United States – the University of Cincinnati. His impressive performances on the track – inclusive of all conference honours in the 100m – have earned him a spot on the Olympic team to compete among the world’s best athletes.
The three athletes will compete under universality spots. This initiative by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) ensures that National Olympic Committees (NOCs) with no athletes meeting the qualifying standards still have the opportunity to participate. Universality spots aim to promote inclusivity and global representation at the Olympics, allowing athletes from smaller or less competitive nations to experience and compete on sports’ grandest stage.
The inclusion of these athletes not only highlights their individual talents but also represents a significant milestone for St. Kitts and Nevis in the international sporting arena.
The full delegation, inclusive of team officials and support staff, will be announced shortly, according to the SKNOC.
