Southern University delegation tours Bayford’s Farm to strengthen agricultural collaboration with St. Kitts and Nevis

In a significant move to bolster the agricultural sector in St. Kitts and Nevis, a delegation from Southern University visited Bayford’s Farm on 16th July, 2024. This visit follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between St. Kitts and Nevis and Southern University (Louisiana) in 2023 aimed at enhancing the nation’s agricultural capabilities and sustainability efforts.

Bayford’s Farm is a central element of the government’s strategy to expand livestock farming, reduce the country’s reliance on food imports, and contribute to meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The tour of the farm, led by Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew and Minister of Agriculture, Samal Duggins, highlighted the government’s commitment to advancing agricultural development.

As part of the MoU, the Southern University Agriculture Center will provide expert consulting services on environmentally friendly, sustainable agriculture to the Ministry of Agriculture.

This collaboration is designed to support the local farming community with the latest knowledge and expertise in sustainable agriculture practices, climate change adaptation, and the cultivation of medicinal plants, including cannabis. Additionally, the Agriculture Center will offer certification courses in vendor food safety, further supporting agricultural businesses in the Federation.

The delegation’s tour offered valuable insight into the logistics and implementation of the local farming programme, highlighting the progress and potential of St. Kitts and Nevis’ agricultural sector.

The visit also included a tour of the Poultry Hatchery, an integral part of the government’s vision for livestock development.

Several key figures also participated in the tour including Ambassador Hadiya Claxton, Special Envoy for Investment, Development, and International Business Relations; Miguel Flemming, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture; and Dr. Ashton Stanley, Special Advisor to the Ministry of Agriculture. Their participation underscored the multifaceted approach being taken to enhance agricultural investment and development in the region.

The partnership with Southern University marks a crucial step in advancing sustainable agriculture in St. Kitts and Nevis, leveraging international expertise to strengthen local capabilities and drive economic growth in the agricultural sector.
