Sam, a resident of Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara, and Higgins, from Wismar Housing Scheme in Linden, were immediately taken into custody.
Four days later, on 22 July, the two soldiers were formally charged with ‘Possession of Narcotics for the purpose of Trafficking’ – a serious offence that carries hefty penalties in Guyana.
The following day, they appeared before the Golden Grove Magistrate’s Court, where both men entered pleas of not guilty.
Despite their pleas, the magistrate denied bail and they were remanded to prison, where they will remain until their next court appearance, scheduled for August 12.
