A shocked nation awoke to the news of the passing of the former parliamentary representative for Constituency 4, Glenn Phillip.
As word of his unexpected passing rippled through the nation on Thursday morning, the National Assembly also expressed shock and sadness at the news during a session that was scheduled on the same day.
To honour the memory of their late colleague, the scheduled session was rescheduled to be held on 2nd August.
Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew conveyed condolences to Phillip’s wife and family and expressed gratitude on behalf of the government for Phillip’s contribution to national development, especially as the former elected representative of Constituency 4.
“It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Hon. Glenn “Ghost” Phillip. I extend my deepest condolences to his family and friends,” said Prime Minister Drew. “I joined Glen as a candidate on the SKNLP ticket in 2013. He was always supportive and encouraging. His contribution to our nation as a Member of Parliament and a prominent basketball player is profound and will always be remembered.
“On behalf of a grateful nation, I express heartfelt thanks for all that he contributed.”
Former MP Phillip’s Labour Party successor, the current MP for Constituency 4 and Minister of Sport, Samal Duggins, also paid homage to Phillip, who at the time of his death was an advisor in the Ministry of Sport.
Duggins underscored Phillip’s contributions to sport, especially in basketball. Phillip in his youth represented St. Kitts and Nevis as a basketball player and coach. Just before his death, Phillip participated in a basketball camp for young people as a facilitator.
Similar sentiments were echoed by other members of the House who all conveyed their support to his family and residents of Constituency 4.
Glenn Phillip served as Minister of Sport, Telecommunications and Youth Empowerment between 2010 and 2015.
He was 56-years-old.
Meanwhile, the Parliament also observed a moment of silence in remembrance of victims of the MV Christena tragedy which occurred on 1st August, 1970. The vessel sank on a routine trip between St. Kitts and Nevis, claiming the lives of 233 souls.
