Addressing the Parliament on 2nd August, Minister of Sport and the Creative Economy, Samal Duggins, paid tribute to the athletes who represented the Federation at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Duggins highlighted the commendable performances of the athletes, particularly 15-year-old swimmer, Troy Nisbett, who excelled despite the lack of ideal swimming facilities in St. Kitts and Nevis. He emphasised the pride and celebration these athletes have brought to the country with their outstanding performances.
Minister Duggins expressed his government’s commitment to supporting young athletes and providing them with opportunities to develop their skills. He asserted the need to create an environment that is conducive to their development, while affirming the government’s dedication to enhancing the sport sector.
Several key initiatives were mentioned in Duggins’ remarks, including the reintroduction of school sports competitions. After several years of absence, netball, cricket, and football have been reintroduced in schools. This move aims to foster early development and engagement in sports among students.
He also addressed facility maintenance and renovation. Minister Duggins said his ministry is focusing on the cyclical maintenance and renovation of major sporting facilities. Significant work is either underway or planned for venues including the Kim Collins Stadium, Basketball City, and Warner Park Cricket Stadium which will encompass the Cricket Stadium, Pam Tyson Netball Complex, and Tennis Complex.
Minister Duggins also outlined the government’s focus on sport’s impact on the country’s health and societal outcomes. He underscored the importance of sport in combating non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and instilling fundamental values in youth, which can help reduce crime and violence. The health benefits and social impact of sports are integral to the ministry’s strategy.
Additionally, the minister highlighted the economic importance of sport and the resulting benefits of a well-structured sport sector. Duggins continued confidence said the continued confidence of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) in St. Kitts and Nevis’ brand and the success of local athletes are indicative of the economic benefits of a robust sporting framework.
He further spotlighted prominent athletes such as cricketers Mikyle Louis, Jeremiah Louis, and Jahzara Claxton, and expressed the need for ongoing support of both established and emerging athletes.
Minister Duggins concluded by emphasising the need for a holistic approach to sport development which prioritises infrastructure, health, social values, and economic benefits.
His remarks reflected the government’s strategic efforts to bolster the sport sector and support athletes in St. Kitts and Nevis.
