The St. Kitts Electricity Company (SKELEC) is actively working to restore power across the island and to stabilise the power grid after the passage of Tropical Storm Ernesto.
Tropical Storm Ernesto passed within 50 miles of the Federation on 13th August. Its impact caused power outages, downed power lines and trees and some property damage was also reported.
The extent of the physical and economic impact is still being assessed.
Ernesto has since been upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph and a minimum central pressure of 991 mb. The storm is currently moving north through the Atlantic.
The National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) issued the all clear at 8:30pm on Wednesday after Acting Prime Minister Dr. Geoffrey Hanley and Cabinet Secretary Dr. Marcus Natta were briefed on the situation.
Acting Prime Minister Hanley praised the coordinated response of emergency stakeholders and highlighted the critical role they played in demonstrating the resilience of the St. Kitts and Nevis community.
Ahead of the passage of Ernesto, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Sherilita Dore-Tyson, addressed the 8th – 9th August United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification and Drought (UNCCD) meeting in The Bahamas. Her presentation examined the impact of climate change, drought, and land degradation on Small Island Developing States, such as St. Kitts and Nevis.
