Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, has announced that the Ministry of Education, which he heads, is undertaking significant curriculum reform.
This initiative aims to ensure that the St. Kitts and Nevis education system remains aligned with the demands of the global market, providing students with a relevant and superior quality education.
While speaking on the sidelines of the CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting in Grenada, Dr. Hanley emphasised the importance of the reform initiative and noted that the existing curriculum has become outdated and overly academic. The new curriculum will place greater emphasis on practical skills which will have the greatest impact in real life situations. The new approach will also use sport as a tool for teaching various subject areas.
The national education reform process aligns with broader regional efforts to modernise education. Dr. Hanley’s observations align with those of the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) Registrar, Dr. Wayne Wesley.
Dr. Wesley recently revealed that CXC is also adjusting its policies, particularly concerning artificial intelligence in schools, and is restructuring subjects into smaller modules. These changes aim to address the issue of students leaving school without adequate certification.
The ongoing reform reflects a commitment to equipping students with the necessary tools and skills to succeed in an evolving world.
