The St. Kitts Nevis Anguilla National Bank (SKNANB) has issued a warning to the public regarding a phishing scam that is targeting its customers. The bank is advising its customers to be cautious when opening emails and is urging them to avoid opening links included in suspicious emails or messages.
Phishing is a type of scam in which attackers send deceptive messages that appear to come from a legitimate source, such as a bank, with the intention of tricking recipients into revealing sensitive information like passwords, bank account details, or credit card numbers. These attacks are also used to install malware on victims’ devices which can also give the scammers unauthorised access to victims’ online accounts.
According to bank officials, the phishing email being circulated asks recipients to “Please click here to see how that was debited from your account,” a ploy designed to trick individuals into divulging their personal information.
In a release issued on 16th August, SKNANB emphasised that, “The National Bank does not send unsolicited requests for information. Any request for information must be initiated by the customer.”
Globally, financial institutions were the target of approximately 28 percent of the total phishing attacks in 2023, underscoring the persistent threat that these scams pose to the banking sector.
The St. Kitts Nevis Anguilla National Bank Limited, the largest bank in St. Kitts and Nevis and one of the largest financial institutions in the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union, continues to prioritise the security of its customers by raising awareness of such scams and urging caution.
