On Friday, the St. Kitts Electricity Company (SKELEC) announced the successful restoration of power to all parts of St. Kitts after the island-wide outages resulting from the passage of Tropical Storm Ernesto on Tuesday.
This announcement was confirmed by Konris Maynard, Minister of Public Infrastructure, Energy and Utilities, Domestic Transport, Information, Communication and Technology and Posts.
Minister Maynard had earlier reported that Tropical Storm Ernesto had a greater impact on the island than initially expected, leading to downed electrical poles. Despite several attempts to restore power immediately after the storm, efforts were hampered by wet conditions, gusty winds, and an electrical fire in a rural area.
Once the weather conditions improved, SKELEC conducted a comprehensive assessment and developed a strategy to ensure the quick and safe restoration of power across the island.
Minister Maynard reassured residents that the power station remained fully operable following the storm.
He further noted that the experience with Tropical Storm Ernesto has provided valuable lessons for improving the island’s electrical infrastructure.
In his statement, Minister Maynard expressed gratitude to the SKELEC team for their dedication to achieving full power restoration and thanked the public for their patience during the recovery process.
