Commissioner of Police Sutton vows to suppress criminal activity amid rising violence in St. Kitts and Nevis

Commissioner of Police James Sutton has issued a stern warning to criminal gangs in St. Kitts and Nevis, vowing to dismantle those who seek to destabilise the nation.

This statement follows a troubling surge in violent crime that has gripped the country.

The Commissioner’s address on Wednesday came in the wake of the Federation’s 25th murder of 2024. This latest homicide marked a sobering milestone that has heightened concerns over public safety.

In his speech, Commissioner Sutton condemned the recent wave of gun violence which he described a threat to the values of peace and community that the nation holds dear.

“We are committed to taking a more proactive approach in law enforcement, mobilising all available resources to investigate and bring an end to these vicious acts,” said Commissioner Sutton.

He emphasised that while detection and bringing perpetrators to justice remains critical, the primary objective of the Police and Security Forces is to prevent crime and violence before it occurs and to avert retaliatory actions that could exacerbate the situation.

Commissioner Sutton has assured the public that the police force will spare no effort in its pursuit of justice.

“Criminals are outnumbered by law abiding citizens and should not be allowed to terrorise our communities,” he declared, while urging residents to remain vigilant and to report any information that might aid in the prevention or detection of criminal activities.

Acknowledging the challenging times facing the nation, Commissioner Sutton expressed confidence in the ability of St. Kitts and Nevis to unite in a concerted effort against crime. He underscored the need for long term strategies to curb violence, including greater community engagement, enhanced mental health support, tougher legislative measures, and improved policing tactics.

Commissioner Sutton reaffirmed the commitment of the police to working alongside all stakeholders in the pursuit of viable solutions to ensure the safety and security of every person in St. Kitts and Nevis.
