The commissioning of a new primary crusher at the Government Quarry represents a significant step in the strategic overhaul of the facility, enhancing its capacity to meet the demands of several delayed infrastructure projects.
Minister of Public Infrastructure, Energy and Utilities, Domestic Transport, Information, Communication and Technology and Posts, Konris Maynard, highlighted this development during a site visit on 22nd August during which he emphasised the importance of the upgrade for ongoing and upcoming projects.
General Manager of the Government Quarry, Jermaine Lake, expressed enthusiasm over the acquisition of the new machinery. He highlighted the efficiency and mobility of the primary crusher which will reduce operational costs by eliminating the need for material transportation to the plant.
The new primary crusher has an output capacity of 400 tons per hour. This is a significant improvement over the 255 tons per hour produced by the outdated equipment.
This increase in efficiency is expected to support projects including the construction of new concrete roads in various communities, the St. Peter’s Main Road project, coastline and ghaut side revetments, the construction of water storage tanks, and the establishment of the new desalination plants.
The quarry is also set to receive a secondary crusher which will produce smaller stone sizes essential for construction.
The modernised equipment will also play a crucial role in supporting the Smart Home initiative, involving the construction of hundreds of homes, and the construction of the new JNF Hospital.
The old crushers, in operation since 1988, were long overdue for replacement. This upgrade marks a significant advancement in modernisation efforts at the Government Quarry.
