Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew reaffirmed his government’s commitment to aiding families in need through the Livelihood Improvement for Family Transformation (LIFT) programme, formerly known as the Poverty Alleviation programme.
LIFT focuses on putting more money into households, with beneficiaries receiving up to $600 per month. LIFT particularly targets families with a household income threshold of $2,500 or less. This approach aims to assist the country’s most vulnerable families.
During his most recent Roundtable press briefing, Dr. Drew emphasised the importance of an efficient and effective programme that provides immediate financial relief to families in addition to empowering them toward achieving financial independence.
He stressed that social assistance should not be a lifelong dependency, but rather a stepping stone toward self-sufficiency.
In addition to expanding pension benefits and subsidising essential amenities, the Labour Party administration has made efforts to ensure that social assistance programmes, like LIFT, prioritise support for unemployed families, single parents, and individuals with disabilities.
Beneficiaries approved under the LIFT programme are eligible for support for up to 24 months, with the possibility of extensions, reflecting the programme’s adaptive approach to addressing poverty.
The LIFT programme came on stream in June this year.
