The Cayon High School continues to operate under a hybrid learning model due to ongoing renovations and corrective actions to resolve a mould issue at the institution.
Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew, who is also the member of parliament for the area, confirmed this during a radio interview following his second visit to the school last Wednesday to evaluate progress on the work being done.
Dr. Drew reassured the public that advanced technology is being used to detect and eliminate any contaminants related to the mould. He emphasised that the health and safety of the students, teachers and other staff are his government’s top priority and will not be compromised.
The prime minister also announced the formation of a task force who will address the mould concerns. The group will include officials from the Ministries of Sustainable Development, Public Works, and Education and a representative of the Bureau of Standards.
According to Dr. Drew, the mould that has developed at Cayon High School is partially a result of climate conditions. He added that the task force’s findings on the situation at the school may lead to revisions in the nation’s building codes.
Although a specific date for the resumption of in-person learning has not been provided, Dr. Drew remains optimistic that it will happen soon.
