New York, USA. September 24, 2024. Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew, is in in New York, ahead of his address to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 27. Accompanied by a high-level delegation, Prime Minister Drew is participating in discussions aimed at bolstering St. Kitts and Nevis’ diplomatic relations and addressing critical global issues, particularly climate change and sustainable development.
The 79th session of the UN General Assembly, which operates under the theme “Leaving No One Behind: Acting Together for the Advancement of Peace, Sustainable Development, and Human Dignity for Present and Future Generations,” brings together representatives from 193-member states. High on the agenda for St. Kitts and Nevis is advocating for definitive climate action, especially for small island developing states (SIDS) vulnerable to environmental changes.
Prime Minister Drew, alongside his delegation, including Senior Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas and Minister of Climate Action and Environment Sen. Dr. Joyelle Clarke, has been involved in several key meetings. One significant bilateral discussion took place with Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, on September 22. The talks, held at the Permanent Mission of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations, built upon the outcomes of the CARICOM-Saudi Summit from October 2023. Both nations explored avenues to enhance sustainability and resilience while deepening bilateral ties.
Prime Minister Drew also participated in a high-level working lunch on international climate policy hosted by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Samoan Prime Minister Fiame Mata’afa. The gathering focused on climate financing and international financial architecture reforms to support vulnerable nations like those in the Caribbean and the Pacific.
In addition to his climate-focused meetings, Prime Minister Drew and Foreign Minister Dr. Douglas met with Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. The discussions centered on strengthening bilateral relations between St. Kitts and Nevis and Ghana, including plans for reciprocating visa-free access and future collaborations across various sectors.
As the Prime Minister prepares for his UNGA address, these meetings reflect St. Kitts and Nevis’ commitment to advancing sustainable development, climate action, and fostering stronger international relations.
Alongside Prime Minister Drew and Foreign Minister Douglas, the St. Kitts and Nevis delegation includes Permanent Secretaries Naeemah Hazelle, Sherilita Dore-Tyson, Director of Public Sector Planning Auren Manners, Director of St. Kitts and Nevis Information Service Sherema Matthew, and Senior Foreign Service Officer Bjorn Hazel.
