The St. Kitts Electricity Company (SKELEC) has implemented a significant measure to ensure a steady and reliable power supply during major upgrades to its power grid. Minister of Public Infrastructure, Energy and Utilities, Domestic Transport, Information, Communication and Technology, and Posts, Konris Maynard, highlighted the necessity of a temporary power solution to support SKELEC’s efforts.
“As we work toward that new 80-megawatt plant, plus the urgent need to service and overhaul our generators that have been overrun and are on the verge of collapse, combined with the vulnerability of the ageing generators and the solar farm’s limitations, it is imperative to implement a reliable, temporary supply,” Maynard stated.
In response to these challenges, SKELEC has entered into a six-megawatt rental power agreement with global energy solutions provider Aggreko. The agreement, initially set for 12 months, will allow SKELEC to perform critical overhauls on the bulk of its fixed generator fleet, ensuring continuity of electricity supply for the nation.
Minister Maynard commended the SKELEC board, management, and staff, particularly the power plant management and operations team led by Mr. Kevin Bennett, for their proactive efforts in securing this temporary power solution. Their interventions are critical to maintaining 24-hour service during the essential maintenance at the Needsmust Power Plant.
Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew spearheaded the list of local officials at the brief commissioning ceremony for the temporary power supply unit. The Drew led Labour administration has committed to significantly improving St. Kitts’ electricity supply, in the country’s move toward being a sustainable island state.
Aggreko officials maintain that they are consistently investing in more sustainable products, fuels, and services to provide clients, like St. Kitts and Nevis, with greener solutions, supporting them at every stage of their energy transition journey.
This temporary power agreement is seen as a key step toward achieving SKELEC’s long-term goal of delivering reliable electricity through a combination of new power generation capacity and renewable energy sources.
