The Government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis have extended heartfelt support to the people of Taiwan following the devastation caused by Typhoon Kong-Rey, the largest storm to strike the island in nearly three decades.
Expressing solidarity with Taiwan and its people, Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew underscored the friendship shared between the two nations and conveyed his wishes for resilience and safety for those impacted by the storm, including the Kittitians and Nevisians residing in Taiwan.
“With over 41 years of close friendship, our two nations share a deep bond, made the more significant by the presence of many St. Kitts and Nevis nationals, including students, in Taiwan,” Dr. Drew stated. “We stand shoulder to shoulder with our friends in Taiwan, sending our deepest hopes for their safety and resilience.”
He expressed his hope that Taiwanese citizens, along with Kittitians and Nevisians in Taiwan, would remain safe as recovery efforts continue.
Dr. Drew’s message of support came as he hosted a luncheon at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort on Thursday afternoon in honour of Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-Lung and his delegation. The event, attended by members of the Federal Cabinet, underscored the longstanding partnership between St. Kitts and Nevis and Taiwan—a partnership formalised in 1983 that continues to thrive across diplomatic, economic, and cultural arenas.
The Embassy of Taiwan in St. Kitts and Nevis responded to the outpouring of support, extending its gratitude to the Government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis for their solidarity during this challenging time.
“Your kind words and steadfast friendship, built over 41 years, truly strengthens the bond between our nations. We are especially grateful for Prime Minister Dr. Terrance M. Drew’s message of support, as it brings comfort to our citizens and reassurance to students from Saint Kitts and Nevis here in Taiwan. Together, we stand strong. Thank you, St. Kitts and Nevis!”
Typhoon Kong-Rey, which made landfall on Taiwan’s eastern coast on Thursday, continued its path through the island’s central region before moving north. The storm left significant impacts in its wake, with reports of at least two fatalities and 515 injuries, as well as widespread structural damage. The storm’s vast size and intensity underscored the vulnerability of island nations to natural disasters.
Prime Minister Drew’s supportive message, along with the prompt response from the Taiwanese Embassy, reaffirms the strong diplomatic ties between St. Kitts and Nevis and Taiwan, even in times of adversity.
