Mia Romney: An Inspiring Trailblazer in Education and Inclusivity

Mia Romney, a student at Washington Archibald High School, has been named one of the 2024-2025 Most Remarkable Teens, an award that celebrates outstanding youth achievements across various fields.

15-year-old Mia, who is visually impaired, has become a beacon of perseverance and potential, embodying the Federation’s commitment to progress in education and inclusivity.

In her inspiring presentation at the awards ceremony, Mia shared her journey, highlighting her academic excellence and personal triumphs despite the challenges she faces due to her disability.

“I am the first visually impaired person to enter a mainstream school setting,” Mia proudly stated, emphasising her role as a trailblazer. “I’ve always been at the top of my class and have made the principal’s list twice in a row. That’s why I think I was nominated.”

Mia’s passion for learning is matched only by her diverse talents. Aspiring to become both a lawyer and a chemist, she also nurtures a love for music, playing the piano, flute, and djembe drums. In addition to her academic and musical pursuits, Mia has a flair for baking and runs her own business, Mia’s Touch, where she shares her love for creating delicious treats.

Her determination has not gone unnoticed. Senator Islaean Phillip, Minister responsible for Youth Empowerment, Aging, and Disabilities, presented Mia with the Most Remarkable Teen Award.

Senator Phillip, who described Mia as “extraordinarily intelligent” and “a true trailblazer,” highlighted her role in reshaping the educational landscape for students with disabilities in St. Kitts and Nevis.

“Mia is the first visually impaired person to be integrated into mainstream education here, and that is truly remarkable,” Senator Phillip stated, adding that Mia’s journey is inspiring others to break barriers.

The ceremony marked the 25th edition of the Most Remarkable Teens Awards, an annual event that is a central feature of Youth Month in St. Kitts and Nevis. The awards celebrate young individuals who demonstrate excellence in academics, leadership, arts, and social responsibility.

Senator Phillip also praised Mia’s mother, Leslie, for her unwavering support, which has been instrumental in Mia’s success. “Her mother is the kind of support we want to encourage, as it’s infectious and empowers others to advocate for Mia and others like her.”

Mia’s achievements reflect a broader societal shift towards greater inclusivity and advocacy for disabled individuals in the Federation. Senator Phillip encouraged Mia to continue to speak up for herself and remain determined in her pursuit of excellence.

“Mia’s courage and advocacy are why institutions have been forced to adapt and accommodate her needs, allowing her to reach her full potential,” she added.

Mia Romney’s success story serves as a powerful reminder that, with the right support and determination, barriers can be broken, and brilliance can shine through—regardless of disability. Her journey not only highlights her personal achievements but also marks a significant moment in St. Kitts and Nevis’ commitment to developing an inclusive education system.
