New Ambulance Fleet and EMT Training to Transform Healthcare in St. Kitts and Nevis

The healthcare system in St. Kitts and Nevis is set for a significant transformation with the arrival of a state-of-the-art ambulance fleet in February 2025. This initiative, announced by Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew, forms part of a broader strategy to enhance emergency medical services (EMS) across the Federation.

Access to timely and effective emergency medical care has long been a concern for residents, particularly those in remote areas. The current fleet of ambulances has struggled to meet growing demands and navigate the island’s challenging terrain, leaving some communities underserved during critical situations.

Prime Minister Drew underscored the urgency of addressing these gaps, describing the new fleet as a vital step towards creating an equitable and efficient healthcare system.

Speaking on a recent radio programme, he said: “This new fleet is designed to meet the unique needs of our communities. The ambulances are equipped with cutting-edge life-support technology and tailored to handle the island’s diverse terrain. This ensures every resident, no matter where they are, can access emergency care quickly and efficiently.”

The ambulances will feature advanced life-support systems, enabling emergency responders to perform critical medical interventions during transit, improving outcomes for patients in life-threatening situations.

To complement the upgraded equipment, the government is also launching an intensive training programme for Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) in early 2025. This initiative will certify EMTs to international standards, equipping them with the skills needed to operate advanced medical equipment and manage emergencies effectively.

“Our EMTs are the frontline of emergency healthcare,” said Prime Minister Drew. “This training programme will ensure that every ambulance is staffed by highly trained professionals who meet global best practices. It’s about more than equipment—it’s about saving lives.”

The training will target both new recruits and existing healthcare workers, expanding and upskilling the EMS workforce. By prioritising certification and professional development, the government aims to build a culture of excellence within the healthcare sector.

These advancements are part of the Drew administration’s wider vision for healthcare reform.

Dr. Drew highlighted the government’s commitment to building a resilient healthcare system that meets international standards and prioritises the health and safety of all citizens.

“These investments are more than just upgrades—they are promises to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis,” he said. “By strengthening emergency care, we are creating a healthcare system that is responsive, resilient, and capable of meeting the needs of every citizen. This is just the beginning of our journey to continuous improvement and excellence in healthcare.”

The introduction of the new ambulance fleet and the accompanying EMT training programme represent a pivotal step towards modernising healthcare delivery in St. Kitts and Nevis. Together, they promise to revolutionise emergency medical care, ensuring that no citizen is left without access to critical healthcare services when it matters most.
