PM Drew Advocates Holistic Crime Prevention

Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing crime with a multi-faceted approach rooted in transparency, evidence-based strategies, and community engagement.

Speaking in a recent interview, Dr. Drew shed light on the progress of the government’s 90-Day Campaign Against Crime and Violence while outlining initiatives aimed at building long-term safety across the Federation.

Understanding the Roots of Crime

“We cannot pay for peace, nor should crime be a political football,” Prime Minister Drew stated.

Emphasising that crime prevention goes beyond enforcement, he highlighted his administration’s focus on tackling the root causes of violence and creating opportunities for vulnerable individuals. A key part of this effort is groundbreaking dyslexia research in the prison system, which has revealed a notable correlation between undiagnosed learning disabilities and criminal behaviour.

“This initiative has transformed lives,” Dr. Drew remarked, referencing programmes that have enabled inmates to learn to read for the first time. “It’s not a failure of character, but of opportunity. By addressing these issues early in schools, we can prevent disenfranchisement and reduce crime.”

Rehabilitation and Empowerment Initiatives

The government has introduced an array of reforms for incarcerated individuals, including life skills training, educational programmes, and vocational certifications. A Prison-to-Work reintegration programme aims to equip inmates with tools for success upon release. Similarly, youth development initiatives—such as an expanded Scouts and Guides programme and football training camps—are providing young people with discipline, teamwork skills, and international opportunities.

Technology and Regional Collaboration

The enforcement aspect of crime prevention has been bolstered through investments in state-of-the-art technology, such as upgraded port scanners, enhanced canine units, and modern surveillance systems. Collaborations with international partners, including the FBI and the Regional Security System (RSS), have further strengthened the Federation’s capabilities.

Looking Ahead: Institutionalising Success

As the 90-day campaign nears its conclusion, Prime Minister Drew expressed optimism about its impact, citing reduced criminal activity and increased public trust in law enforcement.

“Our focus is on embedding these strategies into the fabric of governance, ensuring a safer, more prosperous St. Kitts and Nevis for future generations,” he stated.

Transparency and data-sharing remain at the heart of the administration’s approach, empowering citizens to play an active role in building a secure nation.

The prime minister’s commitment underscores a vision of crime prevention that balances immediate action with sustainable, systemic change. This approach promises a brighter future for all citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis.
