Prime Minister Lauds Taiwan’s Support and Reaffirms Commitment to International Advocacy

Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew has extended his heartfelt gratitude to the Republic of China (Taiwan) for its steadfast support of St. Kitts and Nevis. He also reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to advocating for Taiwan’s international recognition. Addressing the press recently, Dr. Drew acknowledged Taiwan’s invaluable contributions in key areas such as renewable energy, healthcare, and education while clarifying misconceptions about the Federation’s diplomatic partnership with Taiwan.

“I want to thank the Republic of China, Taiwan, our strong partner. I speak at the United Nations and advocate for what Taiwan can contribute to global development. That is not in question at all,” Dr. Drew stated, dispelling rumours of a diplomatic pivot. He criticised unfounded claims of alternative alliances, describing them as misleading and unsubstantiated.

The Federation’s collaboration with Taiwan has yielded tangible benefits. Currently, the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has a formal agreement with the Overseas Engineering and Construction Company (OECC), a prominent Taiwanese firm, for the construction of a new climate-smart hospital. This transformative project is set to commence soon.

Taiwan’s contributions to sustainable energy have been pivotal in supporting the Federation’s transition to a greener future. Through Taiwan’s backing, renewable energy initiatives have gained momentum, aligning with the vision of St. Kitts and Nevis as a Sustainable Island State while significantly reducing the nation’s carbon footprint.

In healthcare, Taiwan’s expertise and resources have bolstered the nation’s healthcare infrastructure, enhancing the quality and accessibility of medical services. This partnership has also addressed critical public health challenges, benefiting the lives of many citizens.

Taiwan’s influence extends to education, where numerous scholarships have empowered the youth of St. Kitts and Nevis. Many students have pursued studies in Taiwan, returning home with advanced skills and knowledge to contribute to national development.

Prime Minister Drew reiterated his administration’s commitment to standing in solidarity with Taiwan, advocating for its recognition and underscoring its potential to contribute to global progress.

Taiwan’s unwavering partnership continues to strengthen the social and economic foundation of St. Kitts and Nevis, advancing progress and empowerment for its citizens.
