The government’s ambitious housing programme continues to expand, with ground broken on 13th December, 2024, for 26 climate-smart homes at Stapleton, St. Peter’s. This initiative aims to address the high demand for affordable housing while boosting local economic activity.
The homes, ranging from single to three-bedroom designs, are being constructed by East Coast Housing Development Ltd. in collaboration with the National Housing Corporation (NHC) and the Ministry of Sustainable Development. Land for these developments are being allocated across various communities, reflecting the government’s commitment to equitable housing access.
Local Contractors Lead the Way
At the ceremony, Dirck Singh, Director of East Coast Housing Development Ltd., expressed gratitude to the government for entrusting his team with this transformative project. He emphasised the importance of involving local contractors, stating, “The contractors on these projects are all locals from their respective constituencies.”
Construction is already underway in Ottley’s, where 20 homes are being built, and Farm Meadows, Sandy Point, where land has been cleared for 30 additional homes. Future developments are planned for Newton Ground and other areas, ensuring the programme’s reach extends to communities across St. Kitts.
A Response to Housing Demand
Ambassador Leon Natta-Nelson, Special Advisor in the Ministry of Housing, underscored the significant demand for housing, adding, “In short notice, we will be all around St. Kitts delivering homes to our people.”
Minister of Housing, Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, highlighted the government’s achievements in the housing sector since 2022. Under his leadership, the NHC has delivered 112 homes, exceeding the output of previous administrations during the same timeframe.
Dr. Hanley also noted that the initiative prioritises individuals who have waited for years to build on their lands. “We are not going to stop building homes,” he stated, describing the programme as “an investment into generations to come.”
Economic Growth and Community Development
Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew, praised the housing programme for its far-reaching benefits, including economic opportunities for hundreds of citizens. He linked the initiative to other major infrastructure projects, such as the development of a two-million-gallon desalination plant, extensive road repairs, the Basseterre High School reconstruction, a climate-smart hospital, and a Creative Arts Centre.
“These projects are not just about improving infrastructure,” Dr. Drew said, “but about enhancing lives, strengthening communities, and fostering long-term economic growth.”
Looking Ahead
With construction ramping up in multiple areas, the government is steadfast in its mission to expand housing access, provide jobs, and create safe, modern communities. The housing revolution, anchored by sustainability and inclusivity, is a cornerstone of the administration’s broader vision to transform St. Kitts and Nevis into a resilient, sustainable island state.
As families prepare to benefit from these homes, the project represents more than just bricks and mortar—it symbolises hope, opportunity, and a stronger future for all.
