15 Inmates Graduate from “Stages of Change” Substance Programme

The St. Kitts and Nevis National Council on Drug Abuse Prevention Secretariat is celebrating the successful completion of the “Stages of Change Substance Use Program,” an empowering initiative aimed at helping individuals overcome substance misuse. The eight-week programme, which ran from 14th October to 2nd December 2024, culminated in a graduation ceremony on Monday, 16th December, marking a pivotal moment in the rehabilitation and reintegration of 15 inmates at His Majesty’s Prison.

A Transformative Experience for Inmates

The programme, now in its fourth year, was designed to help participants address the personal challenges associated with substance misuse, providing them with the tools to make meaningful, lasting changes. The course focused on various aspects of personal growth, including self-awareness, healthier decision-making, and building resilience.

Throughout the eight weeks, the participants engaged in sessions covering a range of vital topics:

  • Stages of Change: Understanding the process of behavioural transformation.
  • Myths & Misconceptions of Substance Use: Dispelling common myths to promote informed choices.
  • Personal Values: Strengthening personal identity and core values.
  • Healthy Relationships: Developing and maintaining positive social connections.
  • Weighing Pros & Cons: Evaluating the life impact of substance use.
  • Self-Control: Managing personal triggers and impulses.
  • Accomplishing Goals: Setting and achieving meaningful personal objectives.

Facilitated by a skilled team, including Drug Prevention Officer Ishelle Huggins, Drug Misuse Intervention Officer Nigenda Walters, and UWI-certified drug Prevention Specialist Shaneze Sam, the programme created a structured environment that fostered self-reflection and growth.

A Marked Transformation

“The commitment shown by the participants over the past eight weeks has been truly inspiring,” said Huggins, reflecting on the positive changes in the inmates.

Walters highlighted the remarkable transformation, noting, “They have learned to identify their triggers, develop strategies to overcome challenges, and set realistic goals for their future.”

This year’s graduation represents both the completion of the programme and a significant step in the rehabilitation process, emphasising that change is possible even in challenging circumstances. The participants, now armed with new skills and insights, are better prepared to reintegrate into society and live healthier, substance-free lives.

A Step Toward Community Wellness

The “Stages of Change Substance Use Program” is part of the National Council on Drug Abuse Prevention’s broader efforts to tackle substance misuse in the nation. Karimu Byron-Caines, Director of the National Council on Drug Abuse Prevention Secretariat, expressed the Council’s ongoing commitment to supporting rehabilitation initiatives.

“This year marks the fourth anniversary of the programme, and we remain dedicated to facilitating it annually,” Byron-Caines stated.

The programme highlights the potential for positive change within correctional settings, illustrating the importance of rehabilitation in addressing substance misuse. By continuing this initiative, the Council aims to foster healthier, more resilient communities, offering individuals a second chance at building a brighter future.

As the programme continues to grow, the National Council on Drug Abuse Prevention looks forward to empowering more individuals, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to overcome challenges and thrive in society.
