The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has commenced an investigation into a devastating traffic accident that tragically claimed the life of four-month-old Mekairi Edwards of Half Way Tree, St. Kitts. The collision, which occurred on 11th January near Johnson’s Long Path in the vicinity of Ross University, left several other people injured, with one passenger sustaining severe injuries.
Initial reports indicate that the incident happened between 4:00pm and 4:30pm when two vehicles travelling in opposite directions collided head-on. Glenkeet Richardson of Wingfield Road, Old Road, was driving East toward Basseterre, while T’An Phipps of Farms Project, Sandy Point, was heading West.
Both drivers suffered minor injuries and were treated at the Joseph N. France Hospital. Tragically, the passengers in Phipps’ vehicle were most affected. Twenty-three-year-old Kededra Lewis of Sandy Point/Conaree sustained two broken legs, requiring emergency surgery, while baby Mekairi succumbed to his injuries shortly after the collision.
The police have since arrested Richardson on suspicion of Causing Death by Dangerous Driving as investigations continue.
Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew expressed heartfelt condolences to the grieving family and called for a renewed commitment to road safety. Reflecting on the recent rise in accidents, the prime minister stressed the importance of obeying traffic laws.
“We have seen a lot of accidents, and I want to extend my deepest condolences to the families and communities aching due to the loss of life. What we have observed is a disregard for traffic rules—people driving too fast and not respecting regulations. I urge everyone to adhere to the traffic rules; it could save your life,” Dr. Drew stated.
In light of the growing number of road fatalities, Attorney General Garth Wilkin has convened a task force to explore measures to enhance road safety. Dr. Drew noted that while legislative and infrastructural solutions are in development, the immediate impact lies in the hands of drivers exercising greater caution.
The loss of baby Mekairi has deeply affected the community, with condolences pouring in from the police, government, and public. The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has assured transparency in their investigation.
This heartbreaking incident is part of a concerning trend of recent road fatalities, underscoring the urgent need for both accountability and action to prevent further tragedies.
