Urgent Measures Proposed to Address Alarming Road Safety Concerns in St. Kitts and Nevis

The Interministerial Sustainable Road Safety Project (SRSP) Committee has issued urgent recommendations to combat the increasing number of fatal motor vehicle accidents across the St. Kitts and Nevis. Following an extensive review of traffic accident data, the Committee, led by Attorney General Garth Wilkin, has proposed four immediate actions to enhance road safety and save lives.

Key among the measures is the construction of speed bumps in high-risk zones to deter reckless driving and curb excessive speeds. These installations aim to address areas notorious for severe collisions and promote safer driving practices.

The Committee also called for legislative amendments to support the introduction of an automatic ticketing system. These measures would be implemented particularly on roads prone to speeding violations and at traffic lights to penalise red-light offences automatically, ensuring consistent enforcement of traffic laws.

Another critical recommendation involves strengthening penalties for dangerous driving practices, including speeding. The proposal includes increasing fines, introducing a demerit points system, and suspending driver’s licences for repeated or severe offences.

To improve navigation and safety at roundabouts, the Committee has advised upgrading road markings and signage. These enhancements will provide clearer guidance to drivers and reduce the likelihood of accidents at these critical junctions.

The proposed actions form part of the broader mission of the Sustainable Road Safety Project, which seeks to eliminate traffic fatalities in St. Kitts and Nevis by 2030. This vision prioritises safer roads, respect for traffic laws, and infrastructure improvements to facilitate secure travel for all road users.

The SRSP Committee has urged all motorists to strictly adhere to traffic laws, particularly speed limits, and to drive with caution. Drivers are reminded to avoid operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol or drugs and to ensure the safety of passengers, including securing children under three feet in height in appropriate child seats.

“The loss of life on our roads, including the recent tragedy that claimed the life of an infant, underscores the urgency of these measures,” the Committee stated. It extended heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones affected by the recent devastating accidents.

The public is encouraged to share road safety concerns or suggestions by contacting the SRSP Committee at roadsafety@gov.kn. These collective efforts aim to foster a culture of safety, accountability, and responsibility among all road users.
