St. Kitts and Nevis continues to champion the inclusion of the Republic of China (ROC) on Taiwan in the World Health Organization (WHO). Prime Minister and Minister of Health, Dr. Terrance Drew, has once again urged Taiwan’s participation as an observer. Speaking at the 156th session of the WHO Executive Board, Dr. Drew underscored Taiwan’s substantial contributions to global health, calling its involvement essential to achieving the WHO’s mission of “Health for All.”
Dr. Drew reiterated St. Kitts and Nevis’ dedication to WHO’s goals and highlighted the importance of Taiwan’s participation in WHO meetings and activities.
“The Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis reaffirms its unwavering commitment to WHO’s mission. Furthermore, we wish to highlight the invaluable contributions of Taiwan, a steadfast global health partner whose achievements exemplify the ethos of ‘Health for All’, and call on WHO to include Taiwan in all technical meetings, activities, and mechanisms and to invite Taiwan to participate in the World Health Assembly as an observer,” Dr. Drew stated.
St. Kitts and Nevis has enjoyed a longstanding partnership with Taiwan, rooted in collaboration since the Federation’s independence in 1983. Over the years, Taiwan has emerged as a pivotal ally in advancing public health initiatives, particularly in universal health coverage and the management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
Dr. Drew praised Taiwan’s National Health Insurance (NHI) system, which ensures equitable healthcare access and alleviates financial burdens, as a model for other nations. He also emphasised Taiwan’s critical contributions to health emergency preparedness, polio eradication, traditional medicine, and its climate change and health strategies.
“Taiwan’s contributions to global health security, technological innovation, and healthcare solutions underscore the need for inclusive participation in WHO’s work,” Dr. Drew remarked. He further asserted that Taiwan’s exclusion from WHO is a missed opportunity for enhancing the global health framework.
“Let us prioritise partnerships that reflect the principles of equity, collaboration, and mutual respect. Including Taiwan within the WHO framework is not only a matter of fairness but a pragmatic step toward strengthening the global health architecture. Together, let us commit to ensuring that no nation, no population, and no health issue is left behind,” the Minister concluded.
St. Kitts and Nevis has consistently advocated for Taiwan’s inclusion in international forums, including at the United Nations level, reaffirming the Federation’s belief in the necessity of collaborative global health efforts.
