St. Kitts and Nevis, Taiwan Strengthen Ties with Groundbreaking of Climate-Smart Hospital

The unveiling of the design for the new Joseph N. France Hospital, a state-of-the-art, climate-smart medical facility, on 7th February marked a major step in the government’s efforts to enhance healthcare infrastructure. It also underscored the deepening relationship between St. Kitts and Nevis and the Republic of China (Taiwan).

The hospital project, a collaboration with Taiwan’s Overseas Engineering & Construction Company (OECC), represents the largest cooperation initiative ever undertaken between the two nations.

His Excellency Michael Lin, Taiwan’s Ambassador to St. Kitts and Nevis, highlighted the 42-year-long partnership between the two countries and their shared vision for development.

“We are ensuring a facility that meets the highest standard of medical excellence. This new hospital will not only be a modern and efficient healthcare institution but also a climate-resilient and smart facility designed to meet the evolving needs of the people,” Ambassador Lin stated.

He reaffirmed that the multi-million-dollar hospital will be built to meet international accreditation standards, making it the first of its kind in the region. The project prioritises patient comfort, operational efficiency, and accessibility, ensuring top-tier medical care for clinicians, physicians, and patients alike.

Ambassador Lin expressed confidence in OECC’s ability to deliver the project on time and to the highest quality standards. He also reiterated Taiwan’s gratitude for St. Kitts and Nevis’ continued support of Taiwan’s inclusion in major international organisations, such as the United Nations and the World Health Organization.

“Taiwan will continue to support St. Kitts and Nevis by demonstrating the spirit of ‘Taiwan Can Help, and Taiwan Is Helping,’” he concluded.

Construction of the new hospital is set to begin on 15 acres of land at West Farm, just outside Basseterre.
