Meta Description: St. Kitts and Nevis’ Tabasco Pepper Project moves into full-scale production with over 100 acres secured, boosting exports, job creation, and agricultural development.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Marine Resources has reached a major milestone in its national agricultural agenda, confirming that the Tabasco Pepper Project has officially transitioned from its experimental phase to full-scale production.
Minister of Agriculture, Samal Duggins, announced that the government has acquired over 100 acres of land specifically for the cultivation of Tabasco peppers—a key step in positioning St. Kitts and Nevis on the global agribusiness map.
“We’ve completed the experimental phase with impressive results. The expert from Tabasco visited and was highly impressed. We are now rolling out full production, acquiring land, and have secured over 100 acres so far. It’s a three-month process to harvest, and by year-end, we aim to export agricultural produce to the United States for the first time in a long time,” Duggins stated.
This announcement follows a site visit by Christian Brown, Field Technician for the McIlhenny Company, manufacturer of TABASCO® brand products. Brown inspected the Fahie’s Estate in Newton Ground, assessed production systems, and praised the island’s fertile soil and government-led agricultural initiatives. He also provided technical guidance to the local team, underscoring the country’s potential to meet Tabasco’s quality standards and expand production.
Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew welcomed the project’s progress, highlighting its economic and employment benefits.
“Every acre creates three to five jobs, so with 100 acres, you can estimate the employment impact. We plan to expand to 200 acres or more. Additionally, the Minister will outline plans for diversifying into other crops to enhance exports and enter larger markets. We are making critical agricultural investments because food security is essential for our people,” Dr. Drew stated.
The Tabasco Pepper Project is a landmark opportunity for St. Kitts and Nevis as it seeks to revitalise agriculture, boost exports, and strengthen food security. With the first harvest expected in six to eight months, the initiative is set to generate jobs, increase exports, and drive economic growth in the Federation.
