In a strategic push to strengthen food security and revitalise local agriculture, the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis hosted a comprehensive pineapple training for farmers at the Tabernacle Outreach Centre on Wednesday, 2nd April, 2025. Facilitated by the Department of Agriculture, the hands-on session forms part of a wider initiative aimed at improving productivity, crop quality, and technical know-how across the island.
The training specifically targeted farmers who had previously received pineapple suckers from the Department. Agriculture Extension Officer for District 3, Mr. Dion Weekes, led the session, offering live demonstrations and practical guidance on key cultivation techniques essential to successful pineapple farming.
“Spacing is one of the most important things—12 inches by 12 inches with a three-foot span between rows helps manage crop growth and improve quality,” Mr. Weekes explained. He also emphasised the need to maintain clean growing conditions and closely monitor for pests and diseases, which can significantly affect yield.
“Although pineapples look rugged, they’re vulnerable to a range of pests like ants, spiders, mice, and fungi,” he added. “Monitoring rainfall is also key, since excess water can cause the fruit to rot.”
Weekes expressed optimism about the future of pineapple farming on the island. “There’s already high local demand, and right now we’re not meeting it. With each plant capable of producing up to five slips, in five to six months, farmers could multiply their crop fivefold. We’re also exploring value-added products—pineapple slices, juices, and dices—to expand the market.”
The training session also served as a platform for knowledge-sharing among farmers. Crop farmer Damion Cannonier praised the workshop for its relevance and depth. “It was timely and necessary,” he said. “I learned new things—how to induce flowering, treat slips before transplanting, and identify pests. It’s definitely going to improve my farming practices.”
The programme covered various best practices including pest control, soil preparation, water management, and crop spacing. It also highlighted the government’s ongoing support for local food production through technical assistance, capacity-building, and market-driven farming initiatives.
As part of its broader commitment under the Sustainable Island State Agenda, the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis continues to prioritise agriculture development and empower farmers with the tools and training they need to thrive.
