St. Kitts and Nevis Prepares for Full Rollout of National Digital ID by 2026

The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis is moving steadily toward launching its National Digital ID system, with a full rollout expected by mid-2026 and a pilot programme set to begin in January 2025. Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew confirmed the timeline last Thursday in a media appearance describing the initiative as a major step in modernising public services under the Sustainable Island State Agenda.

The National Digital ID will allow citizens and residents to apply online for essential services such as birth certificates, passports, and other government documents—eliminating long lines and reducing bureaucratic delays. “It will revolutionise how government works for our people,” said Prime Minister Drew. “From diaspora engagement to in-country service delivery, this will be a transformational step for the Federation.”

Backed by technical support from Taiwan’s International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF), the Ministry of Information, Communications and Technology began developing the e‑ID platform in mid-2023. The system has passed through key design, prototyping, and integration milestones. As of December 2024, it entered the integration phase, with plans well on track for deployment in early 2025.

In June 2024, more than 40 stakeholders from public and private sectors participated in national consultations to help shape the system. The digital ID will include both online credentials and a physical ID card to ensure secure authentication across various services.

The digital ID platform is part of a broader digital transformation effort that includes the launch of online portals for driver’s licence renewals, tax payments, and an e‑passport system. The government has also established a Digital Transformation Unit and is prioritising the strengthening of data protection laws and cybersecurity systems to safeguard personal information.

Prime Minister Drew also highlighted the ID’s role in improving access for nationals living abroad, enabling the diaspora to access government services such as passport renewals and property tax payments without the need for travel.

“This digital identity system is the foundation for building a 21st-century government,” Dr. Drew said. “It empowers citizens, enhances service delivery, and aligns us with global standards in e-governance.”

Once operational, St. Kitts and Nevis will be among the first countries in the Caribbean to implement a fully integrated National Digital ID system, reinforcing its status as a leader in digital governance and innovation.
