Education Workshops Focus on Teacher Training and Innovation

Teachers have recently completed training workshops aimed at strengthening their delivery in classrooms across the Federation, supporting professional development, and preparing students for national and regional assessments. The initiative, led by the Curriculum Development Unit (CDU) within the Ministry of Education, brought together primary and secondary school educators for intensive two-day sessions.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Lisa Pistana, underscored the importance of transformation in the education sector. “Our education system must evolve. Not incrementally, but fundamentally… Transformation is not a destination, it is a mindset,” she stated, urging teachers to embrace innovation and a culture of change.

Chief Education Officer, Francil Morris, emphasised the role of the OECS Learning Hub in advancing education across the Federation. “The OECS Learning Hub offers access to high quality resources, professional development tools, and collaborative opportunities that will enhance your practise and reignite your passion for teaching,” he explained, adding that it supports a learner-centred approach to foster academic achievement and personal growth.

The workshops also focused on preparing students for the Curriculum Assessment in Language Arts and Mathematics (CAL), with Mathematics Curriculum Coordinator Ornella Halliday Bacchus noting the importance of refreshing teachers’ understanding of assessment objectives for grades four and six.

Director of the CDU, Amanda Edmead, highlighted the unit’s year-round work to support teachers through curriculum design, implementation, and assessment. “This is a culmination of all of the work that we have done throughout the year in assessment, in French pedagogy, and in the curriculum for the kindergarten to grade two,” she said.

The sessions also addressed school-based assessments in ICT, with Coordinator Merellia Delsol explaining that consistency and confidence in guiding students were key goals of the training.

Meanwhile, the workshops included modern language training in collaboration with the Alliance Française. Director Lucille Cauillez explained: “The main objective of the training is to enhance motivation in learning modern languages, especially French. Teachers are being equipped with strategies to foster engagement and prepare students for international qualifications such as the DELF diploma.”

The CDU reaffirmed its commitment to raising standards across the education system, ensuring that when schools reopen, teachers are better prepared to deliver innovative and effective instruction.
