The Christopher-Wilkin Institute of Technology (CWIT) was officially launched on Monday, 22nd September, marking a major milestone in the transformation of vocational education in St. Kitts and Nevis. The new institute aims to expand opportunities for students, deliver demand-driven skills training, and ensure the long-term sustainability of workforce development across the Federation.
CWIT is the result of a strategic merger of three Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions: the Advanced Vocational Education Centre (AVEC), Project Strong, and the National Skills Training Programme (NSTP). Speaking at the launch ceremony on the AVEC grounds, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, described CWIT as a bold step toward revolutionising vocational training. He emphasised that the institute will offer competency-based education aligned with international occupational standards.
“Together, these institutions have served thousands of young people, equipping them with the skills, confidence, and resilience to thrive in a changing world. By merging these entities, we are not only streamlining resources; we are strengthening our commitment to inclusive, high-quality, and future-ready education,” Dr. Hanley said.
The deputy prime minister also paid tribute to the institute’s namesakes, Fitzroy Wilkin and the late Clyde Christopher, pioneers whose contributions laid the foundation for technical and vocational training in the Federation. “Their contributions were not just institutional; they were deeply personal. They believed in the power of education to uplift, empower, and transform lives. Today, we honour that belief,” he added.
CWIT will provide National and Caribbean Vocational Qualifications (NVQ/CVQ) from Levels 1 to 3, offering a more cost-effective approach to train and certify individuals for the workforce. The institute will also implement a Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) programme, establishing a clear pathway for learners to progress from secondary-level training to higher education institutions.
The CWIT headquarters is located at the former AVEC compound at Taylor’s in Basseterre, symbolising a new chapter in St. Kitts and Nevis’ commitment to empowering citizens through skills training and education.
