Newly installed Commissioner of Police (COP) James Sutton says he is committed to engaging all stakeholders to cut crime, which is one of the main goals of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force. He also indicated that attaining of the desired standards must include holding all officers accountable.
Commissioner Sutton revealed that a number of partners and organizations have already reached out to him, expressing interest in the enforcement of a plan of action to bolster the safety mechanisms, already in place, and to assure citizens of proactive measures pertaining to their well-being.
Although on the job for just two weeks, Commissioner Sutton outlined a seven-pronged plan of action for the prevention and reduction of crime and the improvement of relations with all stakeholders, aimed at building confidence and trust.
The seven priority areas are inclusive of the enhancement of crime prevention Initiatives such as high visibility policing/hotspot policing, via both foot and mobile patrol, to prevent or reduce crime, promote neighborhood watches and encourage the installation of surveillance cameras on residents. There will also be a focus on community policing, to promote the active participation of citizens in the policing process, while listening to and reacting to identified concerns and needs of our communities.
Additionally, the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force will continue with road safety initiatives such as regular traffic enforcement exercises, as part of our deterrent enforcement strategies. These initiatives are to be supported with capacity building sessions and human training opportunities for all.
Other areas of high focus are usage of technology in daily operations and forensic matters, frequent meetings with other state agencies to ensure effective and efficient use of resources and the collection and use of statistical data, to monitor changing trends and patterns.
Commissioner Sutton indicated that leadership accounts for the creation of circles of influence and he wants to influence holistic development of the Police Force.
“I commit and subscribe to leadership built on the foundation of positive influence, motivation and contributions toward organizational success,” an optimistic Commissioner Sutton stated.
James Sutton was installed as Commissioner of Police on February 23.
