St. Kitts and Nevis’ athletes, who competed at the CARIFTA Games 50, held in the Bahamas over last weekend, were celebrated for their outstanding performances during a welcome home ceremony at the KayanJet Lounge, yesterday (April 12).
The Official Meet report indicates that St. Kitts and Nevis finished fourth, with five gold medals. The report also puts the number of countries which participated in the CARIFTA 50 Games at eighteen.
According to President of St. Kitts and Nevis Athletics, Delwayne Delaney, it appears that the gold medal performances from the heptathlon and the octathlon were included in the individual medal standings. Jermahd Huggins won the high jump, 400m and 1500m in the octathlon while Jahzara Claxton won the javelin event in heptathlon. These were in addition to the individual gold secured by Akanye Samuel Francis.
An entire government delegation welcomed home the athlete heroes, who have been branded as Team Unstoppable SKN. Among the government officials in attendance were Acting Prime Minister Hon. Konris Maynard; Senior Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. the Hon. Denzil Douglas, Minister of Tourism Hon. Marsha Henderson; Senators Hon. Joyelle Carke and Hon. Isalean Phillip, Cabinet Secretary Dr. Marcus Natta and Ambassador of Sports His Excellency Kenneth Douglas.
The government officials pledged to utilize the available resources in the offices to continue to support the development of sport through the Federation.
They were joined in singing the praises of the athletes by the Acting President of the St. Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee (SKNOC) Dennis Knight, family and friends, high school principals and adoring fans.
After the welcome home ceremony and the brief press conference, hundreds of supporters joined the athletes and support personnel in a celebratory motorcade through the streets of Basseterre.
The full contingent of athletes was Shamarie Newton, William Sharpe, Jermahd Huggins, Jelani Johnson, Alexander Caines, Aldrett Nisbett, Stephan Balson, Ashaun Wilkinson, Cacious Mason, T’anna Liburd, Trishanie Warner, Jahzara Claxton, Mikayla Gumbs, Gianna Phipps, Chesson Liburd, Akanye Samuels Jaylen Bennett, Kenron Freeman, Leon Thompson Jr., De’cheynelle Thomas and Kaliyah Jones.
The athletes are accompanied by Head Coach Kurvin Wallace, Assistant Coaches Dwayne Warner and Roatter Johnson and Team Manager Clytie Gilbert.
