All but one of the nine persons, mostly Cameroonian nationals, who escaped from a detention center in St. Kitts have been found. The only one still at large is Nicholas Santana Areche. The Police are encouraging the public to forward any information it may have on the escapee’s whereabouts.
This information was revealed by the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, in an update.
The fugitives escaped on April 26 but eight of them were back in custody by the afternoon of April 27 (yesterday).
The escapees were among sixteen persons, 2 persons from Antigua and Barbuda and 14 persons from Cameroon, who were rescued by the St. Kitts and Nevis Coast Guard, on March 28, when a vessel sunk off the coast of St. Kitts, after it left Antigua.
The rescued persons were brought to St. Kitts, provided with medical and psychological care and then detained at a government facility, pending repatriation to Antigua and Barbuda.
According to a statement from the Ministry of National Security, Antigua and Barbuda had initially agreed to accept repatriation of the Cameroonians. That country has since rescinded the offer, effectively cancelling pending arrangements.
The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis continues to pursue workable and diplomatic solutions as it is duty-bound so to do, the statement added.
