[SKNIS] Residents of one hundred and seventy-seven (177) households on approximately thirty-eight (38) acres lands, in the Upper Monkey Hill area of St. Peter’s, are to receive official land titles. Families in the area have lived on the lands for over one hundred (100) years, without having an actual title of ownership.
The regularization of land in this particular area stems from the Ministry of Sustainable Development’s Land Allocation Normalization and Distribution (LAND) project for 2023.
Prime Minister and Parliamentary Representative for Constituency #8 Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew, Minister of Sustainable Development Senator Dr. Joyelle Clarke, Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Sustainable Development Shez Dore-Tyson and Ambassador Cedric Liburd, met with the residents of Upper Monkey Hill, St. Peter’s, on May 24, to discuss the LAND project which includes the Freehold Title, and a Rehabilitation of Fencing Project.
“The objective of the meeting is to discuss the regularization of the lands in this area, as families have lived here for generations but do not legally own the land. The initiative is in an effort to empower you, the residents and grant you rightful ownership of the land at no cost,” Prime Minister Drew indicated.
Dr. Joyelle Clarke, while noting the requirements of citizens, which include details they need to provide to facilitate the program, also emphasized the need to empower citizens through rightful land ownership.
“Our effort to regularize this area is to provide the appropriate land titles to the residents, give security of tenure, give appropriate access to infrastructure, and to manage the remaining land stock,” Senator Clarke intimated.
Permanent Secretary Tyson revealed that a project will begin in the same area to complete a wall fence to beautify the area and make it more aesthetically pleasing. She also disclosed that the beautification project will also include a mini-park green space.
An officer from the Ministry of Sustainable Development was on hand to obtain the necessary information from the residents of the area.
The entire LAND project for the Upper Monkey Hill area is estimated to be completed within the next two years.
