Weather Update: Lee Now a Category Five Hurricane

Basseterre, St. Kitts (SKN SOURCE) — At press time Friday (Sept. 8), Hurricane Lee had more than quadrupled in power in the previous 24 hours, with gusts reaching 165 miles per hour.

“It is still expected to pass a relatively safe distance away from all the islands,” said Antiguan meteorologist Dale Destin. “However, there will be hazardous swells and surf for coastal waters,” he added.

Lee has been registered as a category five (5) hurricane.

The moisture and modest instability associated with Hurricane Lee are predicted to cause showers across the eastern Caribbean. Meanwhile, sea conditions will deteriorate later today. Today and tonight will be partly overcast with a moderate probability of showers and thunderstorms over the Virgin and Leeward Islands.

Today and tonight will be partly overcast with a moderate probability of showers and thunderstorms throughout the Windward Islands. The weather in Puerto Rico will be partly cloudy, with a risk of showers and probably a few afternoon thunderstorms.
