Basseterre, St. Kitts (SKNSOURCE) Prime Minister, Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew said “We had to alleviate the stress and strain of our people ” as he reflected on the Independence 40 Reset.
The Prime Minister was at the time speaking on Thursday’s (October 5th) edition of the Roundtable.
PM Drew noted that the Independence 40 Reset aimed to alleviate economic and psychological stresses brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. The lengthy lockdown periods and job losses had left many struggling to make ends meet, further impacting their psychological well-being.
“We know people are dealing with economic stress, psychological stress from being locked down, no jobs…. Mental health is a major issue, so we had to alleviate the stress and strain of our people”, Dr. Drew stated.
Recognizing the immense challenges faced by the people, PM Drew emphasized the importance of this unprecedented Reset, highlighting that no other country in the Caribbean had achieved such a feat before.
“I don’t think any other country in the Caribbean is in a position to do this… I don’t think that this type of Reset has ever been done,” the Prime Minister said.
PM Drew acknowledged the tremendous sacrifice that went into the Independence 40 Reset.
As the nation emerged from the shadows cast by the pandemic, a newfound sense of hope and confidence was instilled in the people.
“We cannot expect a bonus to be happening all the time…. We cannot expect a reset all the time… this is an expensive undertaking… this of course cost a lot of money, but we have done it post Covid,” he added.
The Independence 40 Reset marked a turning point in the federation’s history and recovery.
“This is revolutionary, especially coming after covid… we gave the people of St. Kitts and Nevis fighting a real chance,” the Prime Minister said.
The government’s aim was to provide substantial relief through this Reset, enabling citizens to shift their focus from mere survival to rebuilding their lives.
The Independence 40 Reset represented an unprecedented step in alleviating the stress and strain experienced by the people of the Federation. PM Drew’s reflection highlighted the government’s commitment to addressing the economic and psychological challenges of the people, setting an example for the region.
