Basseterre, St. Kitts (SKNSOURCE) — In an effort to lower the price of electricity bills and safeguard the environment, St. Kitts and Nevis residents are being urged to do their part in energy conservation.
On Freedom FM’s “Issues” talk show, Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew stated, “We are subsidizing the cost of electricity almost to the tune of $100 million per year. That is not sustainable and cannot continue.”
The reasons for using solar and geothermal energy were discussed by Prime Minister Dr. Drew.
He said: “What we are seeking to do from the national level is to switch to renewable energy which is cheaper and of course it does not respond to the fluctuations of oil prices at the international market. If electricity is cheaper a lot of other things will be cheaper.
While we are investing in geothermal and we are investing in solar energy to carry down the cost over the medium term, our people, including me, have a responsibility to conserve as much energy as we can.”
According to Dr. Drew, if every home adopted strict but small energy-saving measures, their bills would be significantly lower, which would have a big positive impact on the environment and the economy.
