Guyana: Probe underway after man dies in police custody

Loop – An investigation has been launched into the death of a 37-year-old man at the Lethem Police Station.

Police reported Carl Benedick was found unresponsive in a cell yesterday around 7:45am by an officer who went to check on him.

Benedick’s body showed no marks of violence, police noted.

Benedick, a driver of St Ignatius Village in Lethem, was arrested by police on Sunday after they received reports that he was allegedly assaulting his wife.

“At the station, his clothes were removed, and he was placed in a cell by himself with only shorts on, while his wife’s statement was being taken. She was also issued with a medical certificate and escorted to seek medical attention for her injuries,” the police said.

Police highlighted this was not the first time that Benedick found himself in trouble with the law for abusing his wife of 18 years.

On May 16, 2023, the father of five was found guilty of one charge of domestic abuse and he was fined $10,000.
