MP Maynard: All workers are important

Member of Parliament for Constituency 3, Konris Maynard, reminded the St. Kitts and Nevis labour force over the holiday weekend that every job is significant and no worker is without value.

He offered up this encouragement as he participated in the annual Labour Day march organised by the St. Kitts and Nevis Trades & Labour Union (SKNT&LU) and St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP).

“As we march through the streets of Basseterre, remember that we are working on behalf, marching on behalf of the workers, no matter what work you do,” said Maynard.

“I see the security forces here, and we want to say that we stand with you in your efforts to…curtail crime in this country. We understand the work that you have to do to keep our streets safe and we value that,” he went on.

Maynard also explained how both the SKNT&LU and 92-year-old SKNLP championed the cause of workers which resulted in many of the rights they enjoy even today.

“[The] Labour movement, it is the one who insisted that there was an eight hour work day in St. Kitts and Nevis, it insisted that we have a forty hour work week, it insisted that we had holidays. These are some of the achievements of the Labour movement on behalf of workers,” he said.

The MP also explained that the advanced healthcare system the nation now enjoys has its roots in the fight for the rights of workers.

“When the workers were out in the field and they had nowhere to go for healthcare, it is the Labour movement that decided that there must be a healthcare facility…within walking distance of every estate in this country,” MP Maynard said.

He also noted that important issues, such as guaranteeing every citizen’s right to vote, were deeply rooted in the Labour movement’s mission to fight for and protect the rights of even the humblest labourers.

“There were those who didn’t want the working class to elevate. In fact, they didn’t want the working class to even vote, and it took the Labour movement to push so that [in] 1952, everyone, regardless of their class, their colour, can come out and vote for their interest.

Labour Day is a public holiday in Saint Kitts and Nevis and is observed on the first Monday in May.

This holiday is held in honour of the contribution of workers to the development of the country.
