Empowering Fisherfolk: Revolutionising Marine Resource Management

Last Tuesday, 30th April 2024, the Department of Marine Resources hosted a successful fish pot workshop. This workshop, a pivotal initiative under the COASTFISH Project funded by JICA, represents a significant leap forward in the preservation of marine life and the sustainable management of marine resources along our coasts.

The workshop focused on empowering fisherfolk by providing them with essential tools and resources. Through the distribution of fish pots installed with biodegradable panels and comprehensive training sessions on their proper use, fisherfolk are not only being equipped to safeguard our oceans but are also leading the charge in revolutionising marine resource management practices.

By harnessing the power of biodegradable panels, the Department of Marine Resources is addressing critical issues such as the reduction in marine life and the cessation of ghost fishing activities. Furthermore, this initiative is fostering a sense of shared responsibility among coastal communities, bringing them closer to achieving a sustainable future for our marine ecosystems.

Hon. Samal Duggins, Minister responsible for Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources stated, “Through collaborative efforts with JICA and our fishing communities, we are driving positive change in marine resource management. This workshop is a testament to our commitment to preserving our marine ecosystems and promoting sustainable fishing practices.”

Moving forward, the Department of Marine Resources remains dedicated to championing sustainable fishing practices and fostering a culture of environmental stewardship among coastal communities.
