New triage officers to improve wait time at JNF General Hospital

Four new triage officers were deployed at the Joseph N. France General Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department this week.

According to the Ministry of Health, “These strategic additions are set to significantly impact wait times and improve patient assessment efficiency at the hospital.”

The newly appointed officers, who began their shifts on 13th May, 2024, all hold medical degrees.

Although not licensed to practise medicine in St. Kitts and Nevis, the Ministry of Health expressed confidence that, “…their extensive clinical backgrounds equip them with the essential skills to effectively evaluate patients at their initial point of entry into the department.”

Minister of Health, Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew, met with the new officers last Friday. In conversation with them, he highlighted the importance of their roles.

“The deployment of these skilled professionals is a strategic and beneficial move for our health system, crucial for our pursuit of international accreditation, and aligns with Sustainable Development Goal Number. 3, which focuses on ensuring healthy lives and promoting wellbeing at all ages,” said Dr. Drew.

Director of Health Institutions, Dr. Jenson Morton, emphasised the importance of this initiative.

“The addition of these triage officers is a key step in maximising efficiency in our Accident and Emergency Department. Their ability to manage and streamline patient intake will significantly reduce wait times,” he said.

Similar sentiments were echoed by Medical Chief of Staff, Dr. Daveen Wilkin, underscored the critical nature of timely and efficient response in emergency settings.

“Proper triage is essential for saving lives. These officers will ensure that patients receive the right level of care promptly, which is crucial in an emergency setting,” said Dr. Wilkin.

“The Ministry of Health remains committed to enhancing healthcare services and infrastructure in St. Kitts and Nevis as part of its ongoing efforts to meet global health standards and improve the well-being of all its citizens,”said a statement from the Ministry of Health following the announcement.
