The St. Kitts Nevis Labour Party’s (SKNLP) machinery is in high gear ahead of its annual convention this Sunday.
The SKNLP is the oldest organisation of its kind in the region.
During the annual activity, members of the party engage in two sessions: one which is open to the public and the other private. In the private session, the internal affairs of the party are settled. These include elections, although the party has indicated that the election of new officers will not occur this year.
On Wednesday, the SKNLP announced that this year they welcome as their guest speaker Dr. Dayton Campbell, a senior member of Jamaica’s People’s National Party (PNP). Dr. Campbell, a medical doctor, became the youngest parliamentarian to be elected to office in Jamaica in 2011 at age 28. He presently serves as General Secretary of the PNP, Jamaica’s oldest political party.
Founded in 1932, the SKNLP first started out as the St Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla Labour Party. After Anguilla’s separation, however, it transformed into the SKNLP. It continues to embrace the motto, “For the Good That We Can Do.”
In the 21 elections held since 1937, the SKNLP has only been defeated 7 times and, with the exception of 2010 has always, formed the government by a majority win.
In 1952, St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla participated in the first Legislative Council elections open to all citizens. This saw then leader of the SKNLP, Robert L. Bradshaw, move from chief minister to the country’s first premier. He was succeeded as leader of the SKNLP by Paul Southwell, Lee Moore, Dr. Denzil Douglas and Dr. Terrance Drew.
The 92nd SKNLP National Conference takes place at Manhattan Gardens, Lime Kiln and begins at 9:30am.
