The Ministry of Social Development and Gender Affairs hosted its first inter-ministerial meeting for Gender Focal Points on 15th May, 2024. The meeting aimed to prepare for the National Review of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, discuss gender related issues, and foster collaboration among Gender Focal Points.
The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action is a comprehensive policy document that provides a framework for promoting gender equality globally. It outlines strategic objectives across 12 critical areas of concern and addresses barriers that hinder women’s full participation in all spheres of life.
“The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action calls on the governments, international organisations, and civil society to take strategic action to ensure gender equality, tackling issues such as discrimination, violence, inequalities in education and healthcare, economic participation, and decision-making,” said Shinnel Charles, Acting Director of Gender Affairs. “This roadmap for action has been instrumental in shaping policies and programmes that drive positive change for women’s rights globally.”
Charles emphasised the importance of active participation, sharing expertise, and collaboration among colleagues.
“Our goal is to develop cohesive strategies that integrate gender perspectives in all areas of policy and practice, ensuring that our efforts lead to meaningful and sustainable progress,” she said.
