Inaugural Foster Care Month a “resounding success”

The Department of Probation and Child Protection Services’ Out-of-Home Placement Unit has reported that its first Foster Care Month activities in May were a huge success.

At present 45 children, ranging in age from 1 to 18, have found a safe haven with the families of 35 good Samaritans who have volunteered to be foster parents.

During the month of activities held under the theme, Engaging Communities, Building Support and Changing Lives, a variety of awareness, appreciation and bonding events were held. These included a Church Service and Luncheon at the People’s Evangelistic Centre, a foster parent workshop, media appearances and a health awareness walk. Foster children and parents were also able to socialise during a family fun day, a Scenic Railway Tour, a Swim with the Dolphins activity and a family movie outing.

The outstanding efforts of three foster parents – Dahlia Robbin, Dion French and Hyacinth Dias – were also recognised and awarded.

Commenting recently on the outcome of the month of activities, Case Manager for the Out-of-Home Placement Unit, Glentine Wattley-Sutton said, “We were fortunate to receive tremendous support from our coordinating committee, Department, Ministry, and many generous sponsors and well-wishers. Their involvement and contributions enabled the Unit to create memorable bonding opportunities for our foster families and their support team. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone for their roles and invaluable support.”

Wattley-Sutton also confirmed that the activities in years to come will be expanded.

The Department of Probation and Child Protection Services, which falls under the Ministry of Social Development and Gender Affairs, also used the month of May to invite more people to become foster parents and open their homes and hearts to vulnerable children in need.

Persons who are interested in becoming foster parents are encouraged to contact the Department of Probation and Child Protection Services by phone on (869) 662-3622 or via email at ohpunit@gov.kn. Persons are also invited to visit the Out-of-Home Placement Unit at the Ministry of Social Development and Gender Affairs’ administration building on Victoria Road for more information.
