The Cayon Primary School edged the Beach Allen Primary School by the slimmest of margins – 5 goals to 4 – to clinch the Department of Sports Primary School Netball Championship at the Pam Tyson Netball Facility on 3rd July.
Tyronique Allen of the Beach Allen Primary was adjudged the Most Valuable for her on court tenacity. Tyronique was also named the Most Outstanding Attacking Player.
Her teammate, Kysandre Whyte, secured the Most Accurate Shooter Award.
Naima Mitchum of the Cayon Primary School capped her inspiring defensive efforts by securing the Most Outstanding Defender Award.
The presentation of awards was spearheaded by Governor General Her Excellency Dame Marcella Liburd and Minister with responsibility for Sport Samal Duggins.
Other members of the presentation party included His Excellency Ambassador Kenny Douglas, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sport, Valencia Syder, and Jennifer Nero, Chairperson of the St. Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee’s Women in Sport Commission.
The competition featured 14 public Primary schools and one private primary school, placed in five zones over a six week period.
Zonal winners – Cayon Primary, Saddler’s Primary, Sandy Point Primary, George Moody Stuart Primary and the Halliday Smith Primary – plus the three best second placed teams, advanced to the playoff round.
The tournament provided young student athletes the opportunity to showcase their abilities with assistance from camps facilitated by Department of Sports coaches and other support staff.
This recently concluded tournament underscores an increased thrust by the Ministry of Sport, the Office of the Governor General and the Ministry of Education to further develop the sport of Netball among young students.
It also marks the return to competition since the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.Click this link to join the SKN Source WhatsApp group for the latest news and updates right on your mobile device! You can also follow us on Facebook here.
