The Charles E. Mills Secondary School (CEMSS) clinched the Department of Sports’ Secondary Schools/Colleges Cricket Championship on 11th July, after defeating the Charlestown Secondary School (CSS) in the final at the Conaree Cricket Ground.
CSS batted first and made 79, all out, off 22.3 overs.
CEMSS, in reply, made 80 for 5 off 24.5 overs to seal victory.
Eirette Richards stroked an exciting 41 to lead the victors.
Earlier, Jovin Leader and Lawshorn Bergan took 3 wickets apiece, for 12 and 13 runs respectively, to restrict CSS to a manageable total.
The CEMSS victory capped off an exceptional tournament for Bergan. He was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after bagging 14 wickets to go along with 75 runs. Bergan also captured the awards Outstanding Bowler in a Match (5/27), Most Outstanding Bowler, and Most Wickets.
His teammate, Eirette Richards, also bagged multiple awards. Richards had the Most Runs for the Tournament (185), was declared the Most Outstanding Batsman and was named the Most Outstanding Wicketkeeper.
The other standout players were Zara Skerritt of the Development Team, Most Outstanding Female; Caiden Francis of the Development Team, Most Outstanding Fielder; and Rajani Didder of the Gingerland Secondary School (GSS), Most Runs in a Match (95).
The Development Team took third place in the tournament.
This series marked the return of the Department of Sports’ Cricket Championship after a long seven-year break. The period of inactivity was exacerbated by the CIVID-19 pandemic.
The tournament also represents a renewed push by Minister Samal Duggins and his team in the Ministry of Sport to reintroduce sporting competitions in schools. The Primary Schools netball and cricket competitions concluded last week.
