Minister of Sport et al., Samal Duggins, led a welcome delegation to celebrate the members of the Leeward Islands Under 19 Female Team who placed second in the recently concluded West Indies Rising Stars Women’s Under19 Championship in Trinidad and Tobago.
The team was captained by St. Kitts and Nevis sports prodigy, Jahzara Claxton.
Claxton was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament due to her outstanding all-round performance, scoring 190 runs at an average of 42.75 and capturing 11 wickets.
Jahzara was joined on the team by six other Kittitians and Nevisians: Jada Collis, Aliyah Weekes, Kayzg Boyles, Jcazenique Hodge, Zara Skerritt, and Gabrielle Harrylall.
Jahzarra did not return home with her teammates as she is honouring training obligations with the West Indies U19 team in Trinidad and Tobago.
Minister Duggins reaffirmed the government’s continued support for sports development and encouraged the young female players to use sport as a platform for personal growth.
He also conveyed best wishes from his Cabinet colleagues.
Earlier on Monday, Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew also extended congratulations to the team on their achievement. The prime minister also recognised the contributions of St. Kitts and Nevis nationals, Sharlene Martin and Percy Daniel, who served as the Under 19 team’s Manager and Assistant Coach respectively.
The welcoming delegation included the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sport, the President and other officials from the St. Kitts Cricket Association, the Chairwoman of the Women in Sports Commission of the St. Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee (SKNOC), parents, and other well-wishers.
The Leeward Islands U19 Female team lost to Guyana in the final.
